Physical Education Updates
Extra Physical Education Time
Students whose winning ticket was drawn at the Fall Fest for the “Extra Physical Education Class” had the opportunity to claim their winnings. On Wednesday, November 30th these students were invited to the gym for 30 minutes of fun and activity with Mr. Vanden Hoogen! It was a great way to continue to stay active and support the Fall Fest.
Second Quarter Update
The second quarter is now starting. Students in grades 1st through 4th should have received grades on both physical skills and 21st Century Skills benchmarks. Kindergarten students did not receive benchmark scores during the first quarter. They are given time to learn, adjust and master expectations. If you have any questions regarding the evaluations please contact me and we can discuss your concerns.
Basketball, Bowling and Jump Rope will be the units covered for students in kindergarten, first and second grades while floor hockey, bowling and jump rope will be the units of focus for third and fourth graders. For some students this will be the first time attempting these skills and using the related equipment, ALL activities are designed so each student can experience success and the most skilled can be challenged. Parent's can supplement their child's learning by incorporating these fun activities into weekend family time.
Bay Harbor's 10th annual Jump Rope for Heart Event will be held January 30th and 31st. Students will receive their fundraising envelopes two weeks before. More information on this exciting and worthwhile event will be in future newsletters, To date the families of Bay Harbor have generously donated more than $95,000 to the American Heart Association.
Please continue to dress your child appropriately for activity on physical education days. Clean tennis shoes are the key to a safe and successful lesson. Students who do not have shoes may borrow from the shoe box. Please continue to practice if your child has not mastered the milestone of learning to tie their own shoes. Accomplishing this challenging task promotes safety, independence and positive self-esteem.
Have a great quarter and Stay Active!

Third Quarter Update
The third quarter is now starting; the school year is going fast! All students should have received grades on both physical and 21st Century skills benchmarks. If you have any questions regarding the evaluations please contact me to discuss your concerns.
Third quarter marks the start of one of the most exciting and popular units - tumbling and gymnastics. This is always a fun unit for students. Safety is a primary concern so please discuss the importance of great behavior with your child. During this unit students will be using balance beams, parallel bars, horizontal bar, cargo net, slack line and the vault. Activities are designed to help students develop by control, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance and self-confidence. Each day students who wish to progress to new challenges will have the opportunity to do so, while students who want to master prior skills before advancing are given additional time to practice.
Be sure to ask your child what new and exciting things they did after each physical education class, children love to share what they have learned with someone at home. Also, reinforce safety and being a good listener for a positive learning experience each day in class.

Fourth Quarter Update
The fourth Quarter of the school year is underway...WOW has the year flew by! As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions of concerns regarding your child or the physical education program. In this final update I will detail what will be covered during the last months of the school year.
During the spring months our units of focus will be striking, fitness, track & field, softball/tee ball and soccer. Our striking unit features many activities where students use paddles, hands and long handed implements for skill development, fun and increased level of fitness. In our soccer and softball/tee-ball units students will be participating in developmentally appropriate activities for the purpose of developing skills and increasing activity levels. The track unit provides a unique opportunity for students in third and fourth grades through participation in the Bay Harbor Track Meet. This event is scheduled to take place at Idlewild Park on May 22nd from 12:30-2:30. More information on this exhilarating event along with volunteer opportunities will be in upcoming newsletters. Finally, students will be working very hard on trying to break a school record. The events include curl-ups, sit and reach, 800 meter (3rd and 4th grades), 400 meter (2nd grade), 50 meter and the shuttle run.
Be sure to ask your child what exciting activities they did during physical education class. Do not forget to celebrate your "athlete's" achievements. If you are interested in physical activities for the summer, please review the summer school offerings and register soon.
